This is a site-specific work, involving three New York-based artists working with a local team of forty volunteers. The performance structure involves an audience of fifty seated in a circle facing outward, with a twelve-person chorus inside the circle, and eight cars and eight boomboxes (personal radios) situated outside the circle. Eight local actors will not only address the audience but their voices will also be broadcast on an unused FM frequency and amplified through the boomboxes. The chorus proceeds in the spirit of a Greek Chorus, where it offers both song and commentary on the actors' actions. Mary Walling Blackburn parsed through 'google news alerts' reporting recent car bombs. She lifted details and incorporated them into a psycho-philosophical script investigating how we surveil and approach violence because of the distances between the explosion and its dissemination. As the performance shifts from location to location, the text will shift to respond to local events, perceptions, and opinions regarding how terror moves over space and time.
This modern tragedy is performed at dusk in a parking lot or other outdoor space. This performance is an immersive, spatialized listening experience that expands upon classic radio plays that included a live studio audience. Jace Clayton, AKA DJ Rupture, will be responsible for the sound design.
The first iteration was performed in North Adams, Massachusetts in collaboration with Danyel Ferrari and was entitled, "The First Disappointment".Christopher Marianetti, Phelan La Velle, and Ven Voisey composed orchestrations and songs. A work-in-progress was staged at Industry City on Brooklyn's working waterfront in May of 2009. Chris Marianetti was the composer.
