Odor Is Speech

Odor is Speech
as performed at The Second World Congress of Free Artists, Aarhus as part of the exhibition

Saturday 20 November, 2010, 11:30-17:30.

Instructions for speech:

  1. Actors sit in chairs facing the audience, patiently listening.
  2. Lights dim
  3. Sound starts with speakers on each side of the room.
  4. The recording will mention how the Bush campaigns used fans and simulated odors at stump speeches . At that point, a fan on each side of the room, is turned on.
  5. At the same time, the persons who activate the fans return to their seats at the front of the very dim room.
  6. If possible, the performers, male and female, spray themselves with rose perfume at the same moment-- this just as the speech begins to speak of an apocryphal story.
  7. Fans are turned off just before the last paragraph is spoken. The people who turn off the fans do not return to their seats. They stand by the fans.
  8. Lights are turned on again when the speech concludes.
  9. Performers/organizers, planted through the gathering, lean into the person next to them and state/whisper: "I think that's supposed to be the smell of a vagina."
