Double Positive
(Materials: Breast Milk, Scanner)
In 2009, E-Flux invited artists to create an alternate currency for their project, Time/Bank. I located existing currencies, alternate and underground and although drugs are an obvious selection, one method of their transport became key to developing a divergent form of exchange. Women I knew as a child smuggled hashish in their interiors. One was imprisoned. What if—in some past perfect or perfect future—the female interior could be used used to smuggle something that mattered to me? What good has a value that should engender risk to maintain it's transmission? Breast milk, pollen, and gunpowder were worth the risk; to put oneself on the line in order to feed and liberate another or for oneself to be nurtured and defended.
In the fall of 2009, an interior was cast of the vagina. In early 2010, this was used to cast the interior in frozen breast milk. The frozen form was awkwardly made portrait of.
In 2011, the form was documented by scanner as it melted on the bed of same scanner. A platinum print of that scan, pictured above, is faithful to the proportions of the scanner. Platinum was specifically selected because it embeds another currency.
I never provided this as currency to e-flux. They received stones, or rather images of stones.
